Course Preview
Stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia challenges riders with the demanding roads of the Apennines. Covering 197 kilometers, the route boasts an elevation gain of 3,700 meters. While most major climbs occur well before the end, a steep section adds a thrilling twist in the final 6.5 kilometers.
It has been quite some time since Castelraimondo hosted a significant cycling event. A decade ago, the Tirreno-Adriatico concluded here with a memorable stage featuring a fierce finale. During that race, Wout Poels emerged victorious after attacking on the last ascent.
That ascent spanned 4.2 kilometers with an average gradient of 7.3%, including sections that peaked at 15%. Following the climb, the riders descended 6 kilometers to finish in Castelraimondo.
This year, the finale features an even tougher ascent. The final climb rises sharply by 700 meters at 9.3% to Gagliole, followed by a rapid 6.5-kilometer descent into Castelraimondo.
Throughout the race, riders will face challenges including the Croce di Casale (8.6 kilometers at 4.6%), Valico di Santa Maria Maddalena (13.1 kilometers at 7.4%), Montelago (5.5 kilometers at 4.6%), and the unclassified Castel Santa Maria (300 meters at 7.4%) before reaching the base of the Gagliole climb.
As they approach with 6.5 kilometers left, riders will navigate through Gagliole; the initial 4.5 kilometers are downhill, leading into a flat stretch for the remainder.
