Ayuso Wins First Summit Finish
The first summit finish of the Giro appeared set to conclude in a sprint among a select group, but then Juan Ayuso struck in the final 400 metres. The Spaniard secured a solo victory, while Primoz Roglic finished fourth, taking the overall lead.
It was non-stop attacking from the start, but no one managed to break away on the first climb. KOM leader Lorenzo Fortunato claimed the mountain points at the summit in Roccaraso. Jay Vine accelerated and created a gap. Alessandro Tonelli, Gianmarco Garofoli, Nicolas Prodhomme, and Christian Scaroni bridged across to him, but they were caught after 15 kilometres of action.
That was when Vine was swallowed up by the main group while the other four pressed on. Paul Double, Manuele Tarozzi, and Gijs Leemreize jumped across. The seven opened up a 4-minute gap.
While pink jersey Mads Pedersen took it easy on the final climb and Romain Bardet, who crashed earlier in the day, could not keep up with the pace, Tonelli, Garofoli, Prodhomme, and Tarozzi were the last attackers to be reeled in, 5 kilometres from the finish.
As the climb steepened in the final kilometres, Giulio Ciccone and Egan Bernal attempted to break clear, but without success. It seemed poised to come down to a sprint until Juan Ayuso created a gap with 400 metres to go. The Spaniard quickly widened the gap and powered on to secure the win, finishing 4 seconds ahead of his teammate Isaac del Toro and Egan Bernal. Primoz Roglic crossed the line in fourth place, allowing the Slovenian to reclaim the pink jersey.
