Course Preview
Stage 7 features the inaugural uphill finish of this year’s Giro. The 168-kilometre course includes three intermediate climbs before the final 12.6 kilometres, which average a gradient of 5.4%, peaking at double digits in the closing stretches.
In 2021, Castel di Sangro marked its second time as a Giro stage start. This year’s route kicks off with an ascent to Roccaraso, a 6.6-kilometre climb averaging 6.4%, with a peak gradient of 11% midway.
After passing through Roccaraso, the riders stay at altitude in the Apennines for about 15 kilometres. A lengthy descent leads them to the valley, where the ascent resumes in Pretola Peligna. Soon, they face the steep climb to Monte Urano, a short yet challenging 4.5-kilometre ascent with an average gradient of 9.4%. This climb makes its Giro debut.
From Monte Urano, the riders head west toward the Vado della Forcella. This climb extends 21.6 kilometres, significantly longer than Monte Urano, yet it's less steep, averaging just 3.6%. After 14 kilometres of upward journey, there’s a brief descent to provide some relief.
Over 60 kilometres of racing lie ahead once they reach the summit of the Vado della Forcella. About 45 kilometres consist of descending terrain with minor climbs scattered throughout. A short flat section precedes the climb to Marsia from Tagliacozzo. This 12.6-kilometre ascent averages 5.4% and is making its Giro debut. The narrow two-lane road from Tagliacozzo ascends towards Marsia, growing steeper with gradients exceeding 10% in the last 3 kilometres.
