Race Recap
Pedersen Speeds to Hat Trick
Mads Pedersen sprinted to victory from a depleted peloton in Matera, consolidating his lead in the pink jersey. Edoardo Zambanini and Tom Pidcock crossed the line in second and third.
Davide Bais and Giosuè Epis attacked right from the start. Lorenzo Milesi initially jumped with them but then sat up—only to change his mind and go after them. After a 5-kilometre chase, he made the junction.
The trio opened up a 2-minute lead, but that was as far as it went. In the final 40 kilometres, Milesi and Bais continued together.
The climb to Montescaglioso proved too much for several sprinters, including Olav Kooij, Kaden Groves, and Sam Bennett.
Groves managed to regain contact, while the two attackers were caught during the final 14 kilometres. Wout van Aert didn’t contest the sprint, as he sat up with 4 kilometres to go.
Mathias Vacek towed Mads Pedersen in the final kilometres. The pink jersey struggled on a small climb near the end but made it back just in time for the final stretch. He jumped out of Vacek’s slipstream and had just enough left in the tank to hold off a fast-finishing Edoardo Zambanini.
