Course Preview
The third stage of the Giro d’Italia sends riders from Valona to Valona again. Along this route, they face a total elevation gain of 2,800 meters. The most challenging climb is the Llogara Pass, stretching for 10.7 kilometers with an average gradient of 7.4%. The summit is located just under 39 kilometers from the finish line.
Italians refer to the start and finish point as Valona, while Albanians use the name Vlorë. This port city is situated in southwestern Albania, directly across from Italy's heel.
During the initial 60 kilometers, cyclists navigate rolling terrain leading to the Shakkellë Pass. This climb measures 5.5 kilometers with an average gradient of 4%, though a flat segment midway affects this average. The first 2.4 kilometers exhibit a steep incline of 8.9%.
After descending to the Mediterranean coast, they head back north. Riders travel alongside the sea, but the route features continual ascents and descents. One significant climb is the Vishës Pass, which starts with 1.7 kilometers at an 8.3% gradient, flattens out briefly, and then rises again to 9% over the last 1.9 kilometers, totaling a climb of 5.2 kilometers at an average gradient of 6.8%.
The road undulates with frequent, short but steep inclines until it reaches the Llogara Pass, known as Qafa e Llogarasë in Albanian. This steady ascent covers 10.7 kilometers with an average gradient of 7.4%. After descending, the last 20 kilometers of the route are flat.
