Kooij Powers to Glory in Rome, Yates Seals GC

The final stage of the Giro d’Italia belonged to the sprinters. Olav Kooij seized the opportunity, powering to his second stage win, as his teammate Simon Yates wrapped up the overall victory.

After 10 kilometres of freewheeling, four Danes launched the first attack: Mads Pedersen, Kasper Asgreen, Jakob Fuglsang, and Mikkel Honoré. That didn’t last long, and soon the riders calmly pedalled on again.

The pace quickened on the run-in to Rome, and once on the city circuit, Michael Hepburn attacked, with Martin Marcellusi, Alessandro Verre, Enzo Paleni, Josef Cerny, and Andrea Pietrobon bridging across.

For kilometres on end, the six hovered roughly 20 seconds in front of the bunch. The peloton brought the last attacker, Cerny, back with 6 kilometres to go.

Edoardo Affini and Wout van Aert then rolled out the pink carpet for Olav Kooij, who sprinted to a commanding stage win at the Giro. His teammate Simon Yates finished safely in the peloton to secure overall victory, flanked on the final podium by Isaac Del Toro and Richard Carapaz.
