Race Recap
Prodhomme Wins Stage 19
Nicolas Prodhomme was among the first attackers of the day. Dozens of riders joined him, but on the penultimate of five climbs, he decided he’d had enough. He dropped Antonio Tiberi and Carlos Verona and soloed to victory. Isaac del Toro finished in second to retain the pink jersey.
Nicolas Prodhomme, Jan Tratnik, and Georg Steinhauser set off on the Croce Serra, while Bart Lemmen and Mattia Cattaneo bridged across. Tratnik lost contact, and the remaining four reached the summit 35 seconds before the peloton.
At the foot of the Col Tzecore, the four were joined by a large group, including Antonio Tiberi, Pello Bilbao, Romain Bardet, Carlos Verona, Igor Arrieta, Chris Harper, Louis Meintjes, and Christian Scaroni. The latter took the most mountain points at the summit.
In the final kilometres of the Col Saint-Pantaléon, the breakaway was down to Tiberi, Verona, Arrieta, Prodhomme, Bilbao, Lemmen, and Meintjes. The GC contenders crested the summit 2 minutes behind them.
On the approach to the Col de Joux, Tiberi, Verona, and Prodhomme headed out together, before the Frenchman went solo halfway up the climb. As the other two were reeled in by the GC group, Prodhomme crested the summit with a 1-minute buffer and went on to the biggest win of his career.
