Del Toro Excels in Bormio

After 40 kilometers of relentless effort, a large group broke away. They approached the Passo Tonale 3 minutes ahead of the peloton, maintaining the same lead at the summit. KOM leader Lorenzo Fortunato secured most points.

As they neared the Mortirolo summit, the breakaway still included Daniel Felipe Martínez, Mattia Cattaneo, Romain Bardet, Brandon McNulty, Chris Harper, Georg Steinhauser, Afonso Eulálio, Florian Stork, and Lorenzo Fortunato. On the lower slopes, Simon Yates, Egan Bernal, and Isaac del Toro fell behind when Giulio Pellizzari surged ahead in the peloton. They fought back, but Richard Carapaz then surged forward.

The Ecuadorian reached the summit 2 minutes and 30 seconds behind the leaders, with other GC contenders trailing an additional 20 seconds.

On the valley floor, Cattaneo, Bardet, and Eulálio took the lead, soon joined by Florian Stork and Lorenzo Fortunato. Later, more members from the day’s breakaway caught up — Wilco Kelderman, Mathias Vacek, and Daniel Felipe Martínez.

Meanwhile, the GC contenders regrouped, except for Antonio Tiberi, who was dropped early on the Mortirolo. Initially, their deficit to the leaders was about 2 minutes, but by the Le Motte climb's base, it had reduced to 30 seconds.

Bardet continued alone up the climb, while pink jersey holder Del Toro surged just before the summit. Carapaz quickly followed, with the others unable to keep pace.\n
