Course Preview
Stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia is entirely flat until the riders enter Slovenia with 45 kilometres remaining. Could three minor climbs, including one with just 10 kilometres left, disrupt a bunch sprint? The race covers 186 kilometres in total.
Starting in Treviso, a historic city of 85,000 residents located about 30 kilometres north of Venice, the Giro has often passed through here. This is the 14th departure from Treviso; the first was in 1927, and the latest occurred in 2019. That stage concluded in San Martino di Castrozza, where Esteban Chaves emerged victorious.
It seems improbable that Chaves will duplicate his 2019 success, given the vastly different route this time. Instead of mountains, riders will face flat roads. The first 140 kilometres are almost entirely level, tracing the Adriatic coastline closely.
Upon entering Slovenia, the riders will confront the Goniace San Martino, a 3.6-kilometre climb at a gradient of 5.1%. Following the descent, the peloton will navigate a local circuit between Nova Gorica (Slovenia) and Gorizia (Italy), completing it twice. Each lap includes the Saver climb, a challenging 600-metre stretch at 6.4%. After cresting the Saver for the second time, only 7.5 kilometres remain until the finish.
In the aftermath of WWII, Gorizia was split between Italy and what was then Yugoslavia’s Nova Gorica. Today, both cities essentially function as one integrated transborder town. The Italian side has hosted a Giro finish five times, with the most recent being in 2021. On that occasion, Victor Campenaerts bested Oscar Riesebeek in a close sprint.
