Kooij Comes Through
It was third time lucky for Olav Kooij in the Giro’s third bunch sprint. The Dutchman overpowered Casper van Uden and Ben Turner, while Isaac del Toro retained the pink jersey.
The breakaway riders were Giosuè Epis, Andrea Pietrobon, and Manuele Tarozzi. The trio opened up a 3-minute lead.
Pietrobon was the last breakaway rider standing in the sprint for bonus seconds. The peloton was right behind, and race leader Isaac del Toro picked up 2 seconds.
Pietrobon’s solo break ended as the race entered the final lap, and then it was up to the fast finishers.
Wout van Aert delivered a long lead-out for Olav Kooij, who finished it off impeccably. He responded to an early jump by Casper van Uden and outpaced the stage 4 winner, while Ben Turner crossed the line in third.
Isaac del Toro retained the overall race lead.
