Course Preview

The 12th stage leads Giro riders on a 172-kilometre route from Modena to Viadana. Despite a hilly middle section, the spirits of the knights in the purple jersey shouldn’t be dampened, as the remainder of the course is as flat as a curling rink.

Modena, the starting point, has strong ties to the automotive industry, with Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati making their mark on this lively university city—a fitting tribute for the stage. Excited sprinters will be poised and prepared at the starting line.

However, there are some challenges ahead. The climbing starts after 35 kilometres with a 5.1-kilometre ascent to Baiso at a gradient of 5.7%, followed by another 4.5-kilometre stretch at 3.6%. After a bumpy segment and some downhill riding, riders encounter a short but steep climb. The 2.4-kilometre climb to TrinitĂ  has an average gradient of 8.3%.

Following that, a 10-kilometre descent leads to the last hurdle of the day: a 3.4-kilometre ascent to Rossena at 6.1%. After conquering the peak, there’s a brief flat stretch, but by the 90-kilometre mark, all climbs for the day are concluded. Afterward, it’s smooth, flat roads to Viadana, including a level local circuit to finish the stage.

Viadana, a quaint town, is making its Giro debut and has not hosted any cycling event before. The only tie to cycling is Riccardo Riccò, known for his doping controversies, who comes from nearby Formigine—hardly a proud legacy.

Let’s hope stage 12 brings a hint of cycling excitement to the quiet town of Viadana.
