Course Preview

Stage 11 of the Giro d'Italia spans 185 kilometres from Viareggio to Castelnovo ne’ Monti. Although it isn't the longest stage, it stands out as one of the more ‘touristic’ outings.

The day begins with a climb of over 3 kilometres to Montemagno at a gradient of 4.3%. Following this initial ascent, the route levels out for several kilometres before the next climb takes riders up 3 kilometres to Barga, with a gradient of 4.3%. Neither of these Climbs is classified, leaving that distinction for the Alpe San Pellegrino, a grueling 14.2-kilometre ascent at 8.7%, which includes a challenging 19% ramp near the summit. Cyclists will reach the top of this historic climb halfway through the stage.

Climbing the Alpe San Pellegrino is a significant moment in Giro history, as it has been 25 years since the maglia rosa and the rest of the competitors last faced this famed ascent. On 22 May 2000, Francesco Casagrande made a bold move over the col en route to his victory in Abetone.\nFollowing the climb, riders quickly descend for 40 kilometres to Cerredolo, where the climbing resumes, though it's a less daunting challenge this time. The ascent to Toano spans 11.2 kilometres at an average gradient of 5.2%, with some sections steepening to 10%. The next 22 kilometres feature rolling terrain, with a preference for downhill, until the route begins to rise gently towards the base of the Pietra di Bismantova. This climb is 6.5 kilometres long, with an average gradient of 5.2%, and peaks 5 kilometres before the finish.

The concluding stretch consists of undulating terrain, with the final kilometre averaging around 4%.
