Race Recap
Pedersen Wins Grande Partenza
The Giro's Albanian Grande Partenza began with a hilly race culminating in a sprint among the top competitors. Mads Pedersen emerged victorious and claimed the first maglia rosa. Wout van Aert finished just a few centimeters behind in a photo finish in the capital of Tirana.
The breakaway was initiated by Taco van der Hoorn, Alessandro Verre, and Manuele Tarozzi, followed by Alessandro Tonelli and Sylvain Moniquet joining in. The attackers established a 2-minute lead, but that was their maximum advantage.
Van der Hoorn lost contact on the initial climb as Moniquet surged ahead to secure the KOM points at the summit.
The breakaway was reined in early, with 40 kilometers still remaining. Shortly after, Sam Bennett, Olav Kooij and Paul Magnier dropped off during the first climb of the Surrel.
Kaden Groves fell behind on the second ascent of the Surrel, while Thymen Arensman and Derek Gee were the only GC riders unable to keep pace.
