Mads Pedersen Crowns Long-Range Solo Attack

Mads Pedersen capped off a 56-kilometre solo effort with his third victory in Flanders Fields at Gent-Wevelgem. Tim Merlier outgunned Jonathan Milan in the sprint for second place.

Sam Maisonobe, Marco Haller, Emils Liepins, and Jasha SĂĽtterlin initiated the breakaway after 10 kilometres of racing. Max Walker, Victor Vercouillie, Samuel Leroux, Rui Oliveira, and Alexys Brunel tracked them down, allowing the nine riders to open a 4-minute gap.

The gap decreased rapidly due to echelons in De Moeren, while Victor Campenaerts and Johan Jacobs began their pursuit with 100 kilometers remaining. Campenaerts joined the leading group, but Jacobs did not, and when Vercouillie couldn’t keep up on the first ascent of the Kemmelberg, the lead group consisted of nine riders once again.

On the first Plugstreets sector, Mads Pedersen accelerated with Olav Kooij on his wheel. The Dutchman crashed, while Jasper Philipsen suffered a puncture. The only rider able to keep pace with the Dane was Arjen Livyns. They caught up with the riders who had been dropped from the breakaway and positioned themselves at the front well before the second series of climbs.

Pedersen took off alone on the Kemmelberg, putting 1:30 minutes into the first chasers, Campenaerts, Livyns, and Haller, while the peloton crested the Kemmelberg for the final time with a 2-minute deficit.

Before reaching Ypres, the three were caught by the peloton. The solo rider passed through the Menin Gate with a lead of 1:30 minutes, which was more than enough for the win. Tim Merlier sprinted to second place just under a minute later, ahead of Jonathan Milan.
