Powless Upsets Visma Machine at Dwars door Vlaanderen

With roughly 60 kilometres to go, Visma | Lease a Bike launched their attack. After the next climb, the Trieu, the lead group consisted of Wout van Aert, Matteo Jorgenson, Tiesj Benoot, and Neilson Powless. They worked together flawlessly, but in Waregem, Powless unseated Van Aert in the sprint. During the first 60 kilometres, the withdrawal of Alberto Bettiol and Danny van Poppel, along with the strikingly high pace aided by a tailwind, were the most notable events.

After over an hour, Taco van der Hoorn, Joshua Giddings, Fabio Christen, Rasmus Pedersen, and Petr Kelemen joined forces. Lewis Askey, Mikkel Bjerg, and Ceriel Desal tracked them down. The eight put the peloton one minute behind, but the gap didn' t grow any further as the bunch was on the move.

Bjerg and Rasmus Pedersen headed out together in the run- up to the first cobbled sector of the Mariaborrestraat. The peloton was hot on their heels, inspiring Joshua Tarling, Neilson Powless, and Fabio Van den Bossche to jump across. The three caught up with Bjerg and Rasmus Pedersen before Berg Ten Houte, while a power play by Visma|Lease a Bike stretched the peloton until it broke apart. Wout van Aert, Matteo Jorgenson, and Tiesj Benoot made the junction to the front on the climb itself. Tarling lost contact.

On the Trieu, only Powless could follow the yellow trio. What remained of the peloton trailed by 15 seconds at the top. The leaders doubled that gap and continued to pull away steadily.

On the cobbles of Herlegemstraat, Mads Pedersen, Stefan Küng, Tibor Del Grosso, Dries De Bondt, Arjen Livyns, and Alec Segaert dropped the remaining chasers. They weren' t battling for the win, as the gap had already exceeded 1 minute.

Visma | Lease a Bike invested all their chips in a sprint victory for Van Aert, only to be disappointed as Powless proved to be the faster finisher. The American stunned the trio, winning the three- against- one battle for a surprise victory at Dwars door Vlaanderen.
