Race Recap
Evenepoel Tops Van Aert in Two-up Sprint
As the race neared the 50-kilometer mark, Remco Evenepoel made an impressive acceleration, with only Wout van Aert managing to keep up, while Joe Blackmore joined them a little later on. Unfortunately, the young Brit lost contact during the final lap, allowing Evenepoel to clinch an exciting win in the sprint.
Tuur Dens, Jens Reynders, Joren Bloem, Ådne Holter, Antonio Jesús Soto and Iúri Leitão created a nice gap on the Alsemberg, while Sébastien Grignard and Alexys Brunel set off in pursuit. Grignard, showing great determination, eventually dropped his companion and continued the chase. However, he couldn’t close the distance and ultimately decided to ease up, as the six riders built a maximum gap of 2 minutes.
After the first ascent of the Moskesstraat, the breakaway was caught by a group of favorites. A sharp acceleration from Remco Evenepoel quickly cut the group down to around twenty riders. The Olympic champion kicked things into high gear once again on the Holstheide climb, leaving only Wout van Aert able to follow, with Joe Blackmore joining them shortly after.
Behind them, the chasers regrouped, and by the time the race crossed the finish line for the second time, the three leaders had managed to open a 50-second gap. On the following lap, this gap shrank by 20 seconds, yet it didn’t decrease any further.
As they approached the Hertstraat, Blackmore couldn't keep up with the scorching pace set by Evenepoel. Throughout the rest of the final lap, the Olympic champion took on nearly all the work at the front, especially in the final kilometers. He then unleashed a powerful sprint to secure the victory over Van Aert.
Meanwhile, AntĂłnio Morgado finished strong, taking the peloton sprint half a minute later.
