Race Recap
Pogacar Takes Over
Tadej Pogacar made his move with 13 kilometers left before the finish at Valmeinier 1800. Jonas Vingegaard briefly kept pace with him but then fell behind. Pogacar secured his second consecutive stage victory and widened his lead in the overall standings.
Victor Campenaerts initiated the first attack but found limited opportunities. Subsequently, Valentin Paret-Peintre and Bruno Armirail took their chances, joined by Matteo Jorgenson, Sergio Higuita, Ben Healy, Enzo Leijnse, Jordan Jegat, Torstein Træen, Clément Braz Afonso, and Juan Guillermo Martinez, who attempted to catch up. However, the peloton did not permit this.
In a second effort, Healy linked up with Sepp Kuss and Alexey Lutsenko before being joined later by Santiago Buitrago, Romain Bardet, Romain Combaud, Clément Braz Afonso, Juan Guillermo Martínez, Louis Meintjes, Jordan Jegat, Torstein Træen, Andreas Leknessund, and Iván Romeo. The peloton reached the top of the Col de la Madeleine a minute after the breakaway group.
Paret-Peintre lost touch with the leading riders on the Col de la Croix de Fer, and by the summit, the breakaway had nearly disintegrated. During the descent, Bardet launched an attack, but the GC contenders were close behind.
As the other attackers were reeled in, Bardet managed to extend his lead to nearly a minute on the descent. His solo effort was halted with 13 kilometers remaining on the final climb.
Tadej Pogacar launched his attack just a kilometer later. Jonas Vingegaard tried to keep up but couldn’t maintain his pace for long. The Dane was soon accompanied by Florian Lipowitz, yet he continued to push ahead and ultimately dropped the German.
