Course Preview
Stage 7 of the Critérium du Dauphiné features three challenging climbs. Over the course of 132.1 kilometers, the riders face nearly 4,900 meters of elevation gain. The climbing is spread across the Col de la Madeleine, Col de la Croix de Fer, and the final ascent to Valmeinier 1800.
The difficulty begins right from the start, as the riders tackle the Col de la Madeleine – a formidable climb that stretches 24.6 kilometers with an average gradient of 6.2%. That figure is affected by a flat section after 8 kilometers, while closer to the summit, a couple of kilometers ramp up well into double digits.
The route is straightforward: once the riders reach the valley, the road kicks up again for another giant. The Col de la Croix de Fer offers more of the same – 22.4 kilometers at an average gradient of 6.9%. The main difference is that the double-digit ramps are found further from the summit this time.
After descending into the Arc valley, the riders remain on the valley floor for 15 kilometers before taking on the final climb to Valmeinier 1800 – a steady ascent of 16.5 kilometers with an average gradient of 6.7%.
The first three riders to cross the finish line receive time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint awards 3, 2, and 1 second respectively.
