Stewart Wins Stage 5

In Mâcon, Jake Stewart secured victory at the Critérium du Dauphiné, outpacing Axel Laurance and Søren Wærenskjold, while Remco Evenepoel held onto the overall lead.

Enzo Leijnse, Jordan Labrosse, and Pierre Thierry launched an early attack, gaining a lead that the peloton pursued. Despite their efforts, after 15 kilometres, the gap remained at only 40 seconds. Bastien Tronchon attempted to bridge the gap as the trio’s lead began to increase over the peloton.

Approximately 10 kilometres later, Tronchon realized he was caught in no man’s land and decided to wait for the peloton.

The three attackers achieved a maximum lead of 2 minutes. When this gap fell below 1 minute midway through the stage, Benjamin Thomas and Thibault Guernalec managed to close in on them.

As the riders approached the Col de Fontmartin, the gap shrank back to just under 2 minutes. On the climb, Mathieu Burgaudeau, Mattéo Vercher, and Tobias Foss attempted to catch the leaders but were unsuccessful. On the Col de Boubon, Alex Baudin and Gregor Mühlberger took over the chase from Burgaudeau and Vercher, leading to yet another chase scenario.

Thierry lost contact on the Côte des Quatre Vents, with the peloton trailing 30 seconds behind at the summit.

In the final 2 kilometres, the peloton swiftly caught the last remaining attackers, and Jake Stewart surged forward to claim victory in the sprint. Remco Evenepoel maintained his position in the yellow jersey.
