Course Preview
Stage 5 of the Critérium du Dauphiné covers 182.6 kilometers from Saint-Priest to Mâcon, featuring 1,800 meters of elevation gain.
The roads are flat to gently rolling up to kilometer 90. The riders then face four climbs over the next 66 kilometers: Côte de Saint-Amour (1.1 kilometers at 5.6%), Col de Fontmartin (6.7 kilometers at 4.4%), Col de Boubon (4.7 kilometers at 5.2%), and Côte des Quatre Vents (5.3 kilometers at 4.6%). From the final hill, there’s a 5-kilometer descent leading to a flat 20-kilometer run-in to the finish line.
We have to go back to 2017 for the last time a pro-peloton race finished in Mâcon. On that occasion, Phil Bauhaus won the sprint ahead of Arnaud Démare and Bryan Coquard.
Saint-Priest, this year’s stage start, was supposed to host a finish last year — but things didn’t go as planned. Stage 5 of the Dauphiné was neutralized 20 kilometers from the finish after a massive crash took down half the peloton. So many riders had to be taken to the hospital that there weren’t enough ambulances to continue the race safely.
The first three riders to cross the finish line receive time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint awards 3, 2, and 1 second, respectively.
