Milan Wins Stage 2 Sprint
Stage 2 of the Critérium du Dauphiné was far from flat, but it was the fast men who had the final say. Jonathan Milan powered to a commanding victory and, as a bonus, donned the yellow jersey.
Paul Ourselin embarked on a solo adventure early in the race, building a maximum lead of over 6 minutes.
When the gap dropped to under a minute halfway through, Romain Combaud, Christopher Juul-Jensen, and Victor Guernalec bridged the divide. Their maximum lead extended to one and a half minutes.
On the Côte du Château de Buron, Juul-Jensen and Guernalec dropped their two companions, while Jonathan Milan was distanced by the peloton on that same climb.
The bunch caught Juul-Jensen and Guernalec with 45 kilometers remaining. Almost simultaneously, Milan reconnected with the group.
Romain Bardet surged clear of the peloton on the Côte de Nonette, but his effort was brought to an end inside the final 10 kilometers.
Jonathan Milan proved unbeatable in the ensuing sprint, powering home after a textbook Lidl-Trek lead-out and finishing comfortably ahead of Fred Wright and Mathieu van der Poel. Milan took the yellow jersey from Tadej Pogacar, although they shared the same time, while Van der Poel moved within 2 seconds of the race lead.
