Molano Wins Brugge De-Panne
Juan Sebastián Molano has won the 49th edition of the Bruges-De Panne Sprint Classic. The Colombian triumphed in a sprint following a 195.6-kilometer race from Bruges to De Panne. Jonathan Milan and Madis Mikhels rounded out the podium.
Bruges's Grand Place was bathed in pleasant spring sunshine, inspiring five runners who set off almost immediately after the start.
Victor Vercouillie, Michiel Lambrecht, Antonio Morgado, Joren Bloem, and Hartthijs de Vries quickly opened up a three-minute gap. By the beginning of the three local laps on and around the Zeelaan, this lead had shrunk by half.
Wind in the Moëres
The approach to the first passage of Les Moëres caused some nervousness in the peloton, but did not create any echelons due to an unfavorable wind.
Meanwhile, in the main group, riders from Visma-Lease a Bike, Lidl-Trek, and Soudal Quick-Step set the pace, keeping the five leaders' lead under control.
With 15 kilometers remaining, De Vries broke away from his breakaway companions. The Unibet Tietema Rockets rider put in a solid effort and was only caught in the final kilometers. As consolation, De Vries received the Combativity Award for his efforts.
Molano emerges
A reduced peloton fought for victory after several crashes in the closing kilometers. Juan Sebastian Molano surprised the competition by launching an early sprint. Jonathan Milan reacted too late, ultimately finishing just half a wheel behind the Colombian. Madis Mikhels completed the leading trio.
For Molano, this marks his first victory of the season and his very first on Belgian soil.
