What a stunning ride from Chloe Dygert. The American came into these World Championships as one of the favorites and she delivered in emphatic fashion, claiming the rainbow jersey in the women's time trial with a performance that left the rest of the field chasing shadows.
Dygert set off with purpose from the very first pedal stroke and it was clear from the intermediate time checks that she was on a extraordinary ride. Her power numbers through the technical sections were relentless, and on the more open stretches of road she simply flew. By the time she crossed the finish line and settled into the hot seat, the question was not whether she would win but by how much.
Grace Brown of Australia had been among the pre-race favorites given her remarkable form throughout the season, and she gave everything out on the course. But Dygert's time proved untouchable, and Brown had to settle for a place on the podium without the top step.
Marlen Reusser of Switzerland, riding in front of her home fans, also posted a strong time and will take enormous satisfaction from her effort, though like the others she could not match the American's speed on the day.
For Dygert, this victory carries enormous emotional weight. After years of injury and setbacks that would have broken many athletes, she has fought her way back to the very top of the sport and today she reminded the entire cycling world exactly what she is capable of. The rainbow stripes are hers, and on this performance, nobody could argue with that outcome.
