Roglic Dominant on stage 8

Breakaway rider Harold Tejada survived until the final kilometre of the steep finish climb to Ermita Virgen de la Cabeza above Cazorla. Primoz Roglic and Enric Mas overhauled the Colombian before the Slovenian sprinted to the win. Ben O'Connor held onto the red jersey.

The pace was high from the start, and attacks kept flying. After roughly 45 kilometres of action, Mauro Schmid, Gijs Leemreize and Harold Tejada gave it a go. Luca Vergallito, Oier Tazkano, Ion Izagirre, Sam Oomen and Mathis Le Berre rejoined them after a 10 kilometres chase. The eight opened up a lead of more than 5 minutes.

Leemreize was dropped at the base of the Puerto Mirador de las Palomas, while Schmid won the KOM sprint at the summit. He attacked straight away before Tejada rejoined him in the descent. Later, with 41 kilometres to go, the other attackers made it back.

Le Berre was dropped from the lead group with 13.5 kilometers to go, as the peloton chased at 1.30 minutes. Then Lazkano sped up. Tejada followed his move immediately, while Vergallito responded a little later.

The gap was down to 1 minute as they hit the final climb. João Almeida, third in the GC, was dropped from the main group in the early slopes, while title defender Sepp Kuss was one of the riders who got caught up in a crash.

Primoz Roglic set the pace on most of the finish climb, with only Enric Mas able to hold his wheel. Just after the flamme rouge, the two caught the last breakaway rider, Tejada, and Roglic sprinted to victory.

Red jersey Ben O’Connor crossed the line 46 seconds later, keeping the overall lead with a gap of just under four minutes over the stage winner.
