Course Preview
The 8th stage of La Vuelta takes the riders from Úbeda and Cazorla. Again a race in the Iberian Oven, this one adding up to 159 kilometres. The finish lies uphill in the Sierra de Cazorla after a 4.2 kilometres toil at 8.2%.
After setting off from historical Úbeda the first 100 kilometres of the route are nothing special. The riders navigate rolling terrain before arriving at the base of the Puerto Mirador de las Palomas, which is a climb of 7.3 kilometres with an average gradients of almost 6%.
The Puerto Mirador de las Palomas precedes a long and gradual descent. It moves through the finishing venue and then continues further downhill to Peal de Becerro before it loops back to Cazorla.
The first 20 kilometres are rolling uphill before a short drop makes way for the finish climb. This is 4.2 kilometres test, while the average gradient sits at 8.2%.
The 2015 Vuelta saw a simlar finale. Esteban Chaves attacked from the GC group with 2 kilometres to go and he held off Dan Martin and Tom Dumoulin to take both the red jersey and the stage win.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint comes with 6, 4 and 2 seconds.
