Stage 2 of the 2024 Vuelta a España is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.

Groves wins stage 2
Kaden Groves sprinted to victory in the 2nd stage of Vuelta a España. He outgunned Wout van Aert, who finished in second to move into the red jersey. Corbin Strong came home in third place.
Luis Ángel Maté and Ibon Ruiz were La Vuelta’s first attackers. The peloton agreed, and 40-year-old Maté won the KOM sprint at the Alto de Lagoa Azul. The duo opened up a maximum lead of 5 minutes.
The breakaway was reeled in after the intermediate sprint.
Mathias Vacek hit the deck in the run-in to the Alto da Batalha, and the number two on GC was forced to chase. Stefan Küng won the KOM sprint at the summit, while Vacek regained contact in time.
Wout van Aert launched his sprint early, but Kaden Groves came surging past. The Australian took the win. The Belgian was the new man in red.
