Roglic Rocks Alto de Moncalvillo

After being launched by his teammates, Primoz Roglic went solo in the final 5 kilometres of the Alto de Moncalvillo. He stayed well ahead of the other GC contenders and takes both the stage and leader's jersey. Ben O'Connor dropped to second place, Enric Mas still sits in third.

Following several short-lived attacks, Vito Braet, Fran Miholjević and Edward Planckaert gave it a go after 30 kilometres. Isaac del Toro and Simone Petilli rejoined them before the five opened up a 5-minute lead.

Miholjević was the last attacker to be reeled in on the early slopes of the Alto de Moncalvillo.

With six kilometres to go to the summit, teammates Daniel Felipe Martínez, Aleksandr Vlasov, and Primoz Roglic pulled away from the rest of the field. The Slovenian continued on his own after a kilometre.

Enric Mas opened the chase with four kilometres to climb. He closed 20 seconds, but then the gap extended again. Meanwhile, red jersey Ben O’Connor lost more ground in a group with, among others, Richard Carapaz. Eventually, the red jersey was dropped from the group within the last 2 kilometres.

Roglic powered on to take the stage win and the leader’s jersey. In the fight for time bonuses, David Gaudu and Mattias Skjelmose overhaul Mas in the last hundred meters.
