Course Preview

Stage 19 of La Vuelta is straightforward. The first half travels on predominantly flat terrain to the summit of Puerto de Pradilla, and the second half—which is more undulating—ends on the Alto de Moncalvillo. The race totals 168 kilometres, while the finish climb adds up to 8.3 kilometres at 9.2%.

Four years ago, La Vuelta also featured a race from Logroño to the Alto de Moncalvillo. The effectual route was entirely different, although the finish climb was the same. The race came down to a fascinating clash between red jersey pretenders Primoz Roglic and Richard Carapaz. The Slovene took the stage win, but the Ecuadorian kept La Roja.

This year’s route includes one intermediate climb. Following some minor hurdles in the first 10 kilometres, the riders enter a false flat that stretches for tens of kilometres and eventually ends at the Puerto de Pradilla. The last 5.1 kilometres before the summit rises at 5.1%.

A long descent takes the riders to Santo Domingo de la Calzada on the banks of the Oja River. The route then rises false flat again before another shallow downhill precedes another false flat uphill. Eventually, the riders reach the foot of the Alto del Moncalvillo and a righthander opens the Grande Finale. The 8.3 kilometres climb at 9.2% serves several extremely steep sections in the second half.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint comes with 6, 4 and 2 seconds.
