Woods Wins Thriller

In a thrilling stage, Michael Woods attacked from the breakaway as soon as the finish climb steepened. The Canadian champion soloed to a clear victory, while Ben O'Connor retained the red jersey, but Primoz Roglic came almost two minutes closer.

Kasper Asgreen, Kaden Groves, Victor Campenaerts, Sylvain Moniquet, Mauro Schmid, Simon Guglielmi, Mathis Le Berre, and Enzo Leijnse attacked from the gun. Nicolas Vinokourov, Jay Vine, Marc Soler, Ruben Fernández, Kim Heiduk, Julius van den Berg, José Felix Parra, Xabier Isasa, Wout van Aert, and Luca Vergallito bridged across in the first phase, while Brandon McNulty, Sam Oomen, Michael Woods, Gijs Leemreize, Mikel Bizkarra, and Dylan Teuns made the junction after a 20 kilometres chase.

While Isasa lost contact on the slopes, Van Aert reached the summit of the Alto Campo de Arbre first, thus moving into the first position in the KOM standings. He then extended his lead at the Alto O Portel, as he outsprinted Vine and Soler.

The peloton was already 15 minutes in arrears when Van Aert, Campenaerts, Schmid, and Guglielimi jumped off the front with just under 50 kilometers to go. The latter was dropped from the group, while the other three were reeled in after a 10 kilometers chase.

Van Aert, Schmid, Woods, Vine, McNulty, Soler, and Oomen were the remaining leaders at the Puerto de Lumeras. The Flemish powerhouse was the first rider at the summit, and he took the lead in the KOM competition.

McNulty and Vine hit the deck in the descent, and then the remaining five riders hit the finish climb 40 seconds ahead of Leemreize. The other riders were 2 minutes or more behind.

Schmid accelerated as the Puerto de Ancares steepened. Woods followed his move and continued on his own a little later. The Canadian champion was in a class of his own on the steep slopes, and he soloed to victory.

Red jersey Ben O’Connor lost contact in the GC group with 4 kilometres to climb. Primoz Roglic smelled blood and powered on until only Enric Mas and Mikel Landa remained on his wheel. Landa is dropped with 2.4 kilometres to go, shortly followed by Mas.

The Slovenian gained nearly two minutes on O’Connor, though the Australian still retained the lead.
