Course Preview

The 10th stage of the Vuelta a España commences in Ponteareas to reach its climax in Baiona. The last climb is the Monte da Groba before the riders fly down to the line. The 160 kilometres long race travels through the rolling hills of white wines Vallhalla Rías Baixas.

It will be the third time that a Vuelta stage sets off from Ponteareas. The town lies a stone throw’s from the Spanish-Portuguese border. Shortly after the start, the riders tackle the Alto de Fonfría, which is a long climb at moderate gradients. A perfect launch pad for the breakaway, one could argue.

The riders descend onto undulating terrain before two climb within 15 kilometres pears just before the 100 kilometres marker. The Alto de Vilachán and Alto de Mabia precede the biggest challenge of the day, Alto de Mougás. The climb is also known as the Alto da Groba, but since the riders tackle the ascent from Mougás, La Vuelta opts for the first name.

Breakaway specialists combining a fresh pair of climbing legs with descending skills will want to shine, as the finale is perfect for them. After the Monte da Groba climb the last 20 kilometres run predominantly downhill to the finish line at the shores of Vigo Bay.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint comes with 6, 4 and 2 seconds.

The 10th stage of La Vuelta starts at 13:30 and the race is expected to finish around 17:20 – both are local times (CEST).
