Race Recap
It was a dramatic and fitting conclusion to this year's Volta ao Algarve as the race came to its traditional finale atop the Malhão climb. The queen stage delivered everything fans had come to expect from this prestigious Portuguese race, with the general classification battle reaching its crescendo on the sun-baked roads of the Algarve.
Tadej Pogacar put on yet another masterclass of climbing to take the stage victory and seal the overall race title in emphatic fashion. The Slovenian superstar from UAE Team Emirates showed no weakness whatsoever on the final ascent, attacking his rivals with characteristic authority and riding away to a solo victory that underlined his status as one of the finest riders in the world.
The race had been animated from the early kilometres, with a breakaway group going clear and building a healthy advantage over the peloton. UAE Team Emirates controlled proceedings on behalf of their leader, keeping the gap under management before the action inevitably turned to the final climb.
As the road tilted upward on Malhão, rivals attempted to test Pogacar but found nothing in their legs to match the Slovenian. He rode with a calm and measured aggression that made it look almost straightforward, though those watching could appreciate the extraordinary physical output required to distance riders of such calibre.
Behind him, the remaining general classification contenders fought hard for the leftover time gaps and podium positions, crossing the line in a staggered fashion as the Algarve sun began to ease toward the horizon.
Pogacar took the overall victory, adding yet another prestigious title to his rapidly expanding palmares.
