Stage 3 of the 2024 Volta ao Algarve is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
The peloton tackled a demanding stage today that ultimately came down to a bunch sprint finish, with the fast men getting their chance to shine after the race came back together in the closing kilometres.
The stage featured enough undulating terrain to keep things interesting throughout the day, and an early breakaway group managed to get clear of the peloton and build up a reasonable advantage. The escapees worked well together and gave it everything they had, knowing that their chances of survival depended on keeping the gap as wide as possible heading into the final stretch.
However, the sprint teams were never going to let the break stay away, and they set about controlling the pace at the front of the peloton with methodical precision. The gap was steadily wound in as the race approached its conclusion, and the breakaway was eventually swallowed up with just enough road remaining for the sprinters to organize themselves.
The lead-out trains began to form in the closing kilometres, with riders jostling for position as the finish line drew closer. It was a chaotic and fast finale, as these sprint finishes so often are, with teams fighting to keep their designated finisher in the perfect position.
Fabio Jakobsen came out on top in the sprint, crossing the line first to claim the stage victory. The Dutch sprinter timed his effort perfectly, bursting clear in the final metres to take a convincing win and add his name to the list of stage winners at this year's race.
