The opening stage of the 2024 Volta ao Algarve has come to a thrilling conclusion, and it was Jonathan Milan who claimed the stage victory in a bunch sprint finish. The Lidl-Trek rider showed his explosive power in the final meters to take the win ahead of his rivals, continuing his impressive form as one of the fastest sprinters in the peloton.
The stage rolled out from Portimão and made its way through the scenic Algarve region, covering a route that ultimately brought the peloton together for a mass sprint. Despite some early attempts to test the field, the breakaway group was brought back under control as the finish approached, setting the stage perfectly for the fast men.
Milan timed his effort to perfection in the closing stages, powering clear of his competitors to cross the line first and take both the stage victory and the overall race lead.
