The 2024 Volta ao Algarve promises to be one of the most compelling early season stage races on the European calendar, drawing a stellar cast of riders to the sun-drenched roads of southern Portugal. The five-stage race, held in late February, has long served as a barometer for form ahead of the spring classics and grand tour campaigns, and this edition looks set to be no different.

The race traditionally blends punchy coastal stages with a demanding mountain finish atop the Alto da Foia or the fearsome Malhão climb, ensuring that pure sprinters and general classification contenders alike must earn their results. The parcours this year once again rewards versatile riders, those who can survive the more explosive finishes on the flatter days while conserving enough energy for the decisive mountain test that typically settles the overall classification.

Among the favourites, Remco Evenepoel arrives carrying enormous expectation. The Belgian superstar and reigning Vuelta a España champion has used the Algarve before as a launchpad for a dominant season, and his time trialling ability combined with his climbing strength makes him the man to beat on general classification. His Soudal Quick-Step team will be fully committed to protecting and launching him through the critical stages.

Challenging him will be a strong contingent of climbers and all-rounders eager to test their early season condition. Joao Almeida, a Portuguese rider carrying the hopes of a passionate home crowd, will be motivated to perform on familiar roads. The UAE Team Emirates climber has the credentials to trouble Evenepoel on the mountains and will draw enormous support from local fans throughout the week.

The sprinting competitions on the flatter stages will provide compelling subplots before the race reaches its climax in the hills. The Algarve has always produced tight, exciting racing and the 2024 edition has all the ingredients to deliver another memorable week of cycling.
