The final stage of the 2024 Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana has come to a close, and with it, the overall classification has been decided in dramatic fashion. The stage brought the peloton to a summit finish, providing the perfect arena for the general classification contenders to settle their differences.
From the outset, the day followed a familiar pattern, with a breakaway group establishing itself in the early kilometres. The escapees worked diligently together and built up a reasonable advantage over the peloton, which was content to let them go while the major teams kept a watchful eye on the overall situation.
As the race entered the final climb, the pace lifted sharply and the peloton began to splinter. Team UAE Emirates set a fierce tempo at the front, and it was their leader João Almeida who proved to be the strongest man on the day. The Portuguese rider attacked with real conviction on the upper slopes and rode clear of his rivals, crossing the finish line alone to claim a magnificent stage victory.
Almeida's performance was not only enough to win the stage but also sealed his triumph in the overall general classification, rounding off a dominant week of racing for the UAE Emirates team. His climbing ability and consistency throughout the race proved too much for his rivals to handle.
The result brings the curtain down on an entertaining edition of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, with Almeida emerging as a fully deserving champion.
