What a dramatic day of racing in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana as the peloton tackled Stage 4 and the overall classification saw some significant reshuffling. The stage delivered exactly the kind of racing fans had hoped for, with attacks, tension in the peloton, and a thrilling finish that will be remembered as one of the highlights of this year's edition.
The stage played out in textbook fashion early on, with a breakaway group establishing itself after a flurry of early attacks in the opening kilometres. The escapees worked well together and built up a comfortable advantage over the peloton, which was content to let them go and control the gap from behind. The sprinters' teams had little interest in chasing today given the demanding terrain ahead, leaving the general classification teams to keep things organised.
As the race moved into the more challenging terrain, the break began to splinter and the peloton gradually reeled in the survivors. The real action came on the day's key climb, where the favourites began to make their moves and gaps opened up among the contenders. Remco Evenepoel, showing the kind of authority that has defined his recent form, put in a powerful acceleration that distanced several rivals and reinforced his grip on the overall lead.
The Belgian champion crossed the finish line in superb style, taking both the stage victory and further consolidating his position at the top of the general classification. His Soudal Quick-Step team had done excellent work throughout the day to set him up for the finale, and Evenepoel duly delivered. His rivals will need to find something extra if they are to challenge him before the race concludes.
