Stage 3 of the 2024 Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
It was a day that belonged to the breakaway as the peloton rolled through the challenging terrain of the third stage of this year's Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. From the early kilometres, a group of attackers managed to escape the clutches of the bunch and build up a substantial advantage, setting the scene for an exciting conclusion to the day's racing.
The escapees worked well together throughout the stage, rotating efficiently and maintaining their gap over the peloton, which never showed any great urgency to bring the break back. The teams of the overall contenders seemed content to save their energies, monitoring the situation carefully without committing to any serious chase effort.
As the race entered its final kilometres, the stage came down to a battle between the survivors of the day's breakaway group. Pelayo Sánchez proved to be the strongest of the escapees, the Spanish rider demonstrating excellent form and timing to take the stage victory. The Movistar rider crossed the line with his arms aloft, celebrating what was a well-deserved and hard-fought win.
Behind him, the remnants of the break came home in the following seconds, while the peloton rolled in safely afterwards, with the general classification contenders all finishing together and no significant time gaps being opened between the overall favourites.
The overall standings at the top of the race remain tight, and with further challenging stages still to come in this edition, the real battle for the overall title is very much still to be decided.
