What a spectacular day of racing here in the Comunitat Valenciana as the peloton tackled Stage 2 of this year's race. The stage delivered everything fans had hoped for, with a thrilling finish that came down to a bunch sprint after the peloton successfully brought back the day's breakaway in the closing kilometres.
A group of riders had animated the early part of the stage, pushing clear of the peloton and building up a reasonable advantage as the race made its way through the Valencian countryside. The escapees worked well together and appeared to have a genuine chance of staying away, but the sprinters' teams were never going to let this one slip through their fingers. The chase was organised with clinical precision, and the gap was steadily wound in as the final kilometres approached.
When the breakaway was finally swept up, it set the stage for a chaotic and fast finale. The sprint trains jostled for position in the closing straight, and it was Olav Kooij of Team Visma Lease a Bike who proved the fastest man on the day. The young Dutch sprinter timed his effort to perfection, bursting clear of his rivals and crossing the line with his arms aloft to claim a well-deserved stage victory. It was a composed and powerful display from Kooij, who is fast establishing himself as one of the most dangerous finishers in the peloton.
With the stage result now in the books, attention turns to what tomorrow's stage might bring as the race continues to develop.
