The opening stage of the 2024 Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana has come to a conclusion and it was a sprint finish that decided the first winner of this year's race. The stage took riders through the Valencian countryside in what was a largely flat and straightforward parcours designed to set up a bunch gallop, and that is exactly what transpired.
The day's racing was relatively uneventful for the most part, with the peloton keeping things under control throughout the stage. A small breakaway group went up the road in the early kilometres, as is typical for this kind of stage, but the sprinters' teams were never going to allow the escapees to stay clear all the way to the line. The gap was managed carefully and the catch was made in good time before the finale, bringing everyone back together for the expected mass sprint.
As the stage entered its closing kilometres, the lead-out trains began to jostle for position, and it was a tense and physical affair as teams fought to get their sprinters to the front at the right moment. When the sprint finally opened up, Olav Kooij of Visma Lease a Bike showed tremendous power and timing to surge clear of his rivals and take the stage victory in convincing fashion. The Dutch sprinter was well-positioned heading into the final straight and proved too strong for those around him, crossing the line ahead of the chasing pack to claim the win and take the first leader's jersey of the race.
