What a finale to the 2024 Volta a Catalunya. The final stage of this year's race brought the peloton back to Barcelona for the traditional circuit finish, and it delivered exactly the kind of explosive ending that fans had been hoping for after a week of hard racing through the Catalan mountains.
The stage itself was always going to be a more controlled affair compared to the mountain brutality of the previous days, with the route offering the sprinters and their teams a chance to bring things back together before the finish in the city. The breakaway went clear early in the day, as expected, with a small group of riders animating the race during the long approach to Barcelona. The peloton allowed them a reasonable gap for much of the stage but the sprint teams were never going to let this one slip through their fingers.
As the race entered the finishing circuits in Barcelona, the tempo ramped up dramatically. The teams controlling the race did their jobs efficiently, reeling in the last of the escapees with enough time to set up for a bunch kick. The familiar chaos of a circuit finish ensued, with positioning becoming absolutely critical in the closing kilometers.
Primoz Roglic crossed the line to claim overall victory in the general classification, sealing a commanding performance throughout the week. The Bora Hansgrohe leader had shown his class repeatedly across the mountain stages and fully deserved his triumph. It was a statement win for Roglic as he continues building form ahead of his key season objectives.
