Course Preview
The 5th stage of the Volta a Catalunya sets off from Altafulla to finish 167.3 kilometres later in Viladecans. Both starting and finishing venue never hosted the Volta a Catalunya before. The elevation gain is 2,306 metres.
Viladecans is situated almost 20 kilometres to the south of Barcelona, right next to the aeroport. Starting venue Altafulla lies 80 kilometres to the south on the mediterranean coast, a stone’s throw away from Tarragona, where Kaden Groves sprinted to victory in last summer’s Vuelta a España.
The route goes up and down, but there are no tough climbs on the menu. KOM contenders will have only two chances to take some points. The Coll de Les Ventoses is a 10 kilometres climb at 3.8%, which is crested after 65 kilometres, while the Alt de la Creu d’Aragall throws in 7.2 kilometres climb at 5.4%.
The Creu d’Aragall peaks out with 29.9 kilometres to go. The first half is on descent, the second half is a flat run-in to the coast.
The race joins two unprecedented venues in the history of the Volta a Catalunya, although Viladecans saw an intermediate sprint in last year’s final stage.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
