Tadej Pogačar Wins on the Vallter
Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) won the second stage of the Volta a Catalunya at the high-altitude finish in the ski resort of Vallter, the cycling summit of Catalonia. The Slovenian star won solo and now leads the general classification with 1:35 ahead of Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step) and 1:38 ahead of Alexander Vlasov (Bora-hansgrohe).
Six riders made up the breakaway of the day, which took off a few kilometres into the 186 km race: Álex Jaime (Team Kern Pharma), Jambaljamts Sainbayar (Burgos-BH), Jimmy Janssens (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Kevin Colleoni (Intermarche-Wanty), Samuel Fernandez (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Xabier Isasa (Euskaltel-Euskadi), who gained a maximum advantage of about seven minutes.
The group began to break up on the Coll de Coubet, where UAE Team Emirates kept control of the peloton. Jimmy Janssens (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was the last rider left off the front at the foot of the final ascent to Vallter before Pogacar attacked and unleashed a tempo on Ripoll pass that no one could follow.
Stage 3 of the 2024 Tour de France adds up to 225 kilometres. The race between Piacenza and Turin is likely to see a fast-finishers showdown.
