Race Recap
Nick Schultz Wins Opening Stage
Nick Schultz won the 1st stage of the Volta a Catalunya with a late attack. He stayed half a metre ahead of Tadej Pogacar, who came in sprinting like a rocket, but barely missed out. The Australian is the first GC leader.
At the beginning of the stage, Alex Baudin and Mikel Bizkarra initiated the breakaway at the summit of the first climb, Alt de RomanyĂ . Simone Petilli, Kenny Elissonde and Ă…dne Holter bridged across and the five opened up a 2-minute lead.
Elissonde won the KOM sprints at the Alt de Ganga and the Alt des Angels.
The attackers were brought back in the run-up to the Alt de Sant Grau before Egan Bernal won the intermediate sprint ahead of Tadej Pogacar.
Nick Schultz snuck away from the speeding peloton in the streets of Sant Feliu de GuĂxols. The last kilometre ran steadily uphill, and he managed to stay away, although Tadej Pogacar opened his sprint with 200 metres to go. The Slovene couldn’t come across. So the Australian not only took the stage win but also the leader’s jersey.
