Race Recap

What a dramatic finale to the 2024 Tour of the Alps. The final stage delivered everything fans had hoped for, with the general classification battle coming to a head on the brutal mountain roads that this race is renowned for.

The stage was a challenging one from the outset, with the peloton facing a demanding route through the Alpine terrain that has defined this week of racing. The early breakaway formed as expected, with a group of riders looking to steal the glory on the final day, but the GC teams were never going to let things get too far out of hand given the stakes involved.

As the race hit the decisive climbs, it was the overall contenders who began to assert themselves. Richard Carapaz, who had been brilliantly consistent throughout the week, showed that his climbing legs were very much in fine form. The Ecuadorian, riding with great composure and intelligence, managed the critical moments of the stage with the kind of tactical awareness that speaks to his vast experience at the highest level.

The final climb proved to be the crucible where the race was ultimately decided. Attacks flew from multiple directions as riders looked to upset the established order, but Carapaz had the measure of his rivals when it mattered most. He crossed the finish line to seal his overall victory in the 2024 Tour of the Alps, a worthy winner of a race that tested every competitor to their limits across five demanding days of racing through some of the most spectacular scenery in European cycling.
