2024 Tour of the Alps Stage 1 Results & Recap
Stage 1 of the 2024 Tour of the Alps is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
The opening stage of the 2024 Tour of the Alps delivered exactly the kind of punishing racing that fans of this race have come to expect, with the challenging Alpine terrain making itself felt from the very first kilometers.
The stage took riders through a demanding route that featured significant climbing, setting the tone for what promises to be a grueling week in the mountains. A breakaway group went up the road early in the day, as is typical for this race, and the escapees worked well together to build a reasonable advantage over the peloton.
However, the general classification contenders and their teams were never going to let things get out of hand on a stage with such importance for the overall standings. As the race hit the key climbs, the peloton began to reduce the gap significantly, and the breakaway was eventually brought to heel as the finish approached.
On the final climb, the real racing ignited among the favorites. Primoz Roglic, who has made this race something of a personal hunting ground over the years, proved once again that he is in excellent condition. The Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe leader attacked at a crucial moment and put time into his rivals, crossing the finish line to take the stage victory and pull on the overall leader's jersey.
The result sends a clear message to the rest of the field that Roglic will be the man to beat this week as the race continues deeper into the Alps.
