Course Preview

The Tour of the Alps opens with a 133.3 kilometres long race with an elevation gain of 2,060 metres. A 4.3 kilometres climb at 9.4% is expected to be decisive, as it is crested with 17 kilometres left to race.

The race opens with almost 30 kilometres on the flat, and climbing commences after passing through Mezzolombardo. The ascent to Andalo is 15.5 kilometres long and averages 5.3%. The first half is the hardest part, with several kilometres at 8%.

The riders fly back down to Mezzolombardo and return on the same roads towards Egna, but without getting there. Instead, they enter a circuit just after Roverè della Luna and cross the finish line for the first time at kilometre 80.

Two identical loops make up the rest of the race. Shortly after Kurtinig an der Weinstraße the climb to Penon kicks in hard, as the first kilometre goes up at 14%. The slope then levels out a bit, but still, the entire climb is 4.3 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 9.4%.

After reaching the summit in the hamlet of Hofstatt, there are 17 kilometres left until the finish in Kurtinig an der Weinstraße, the first 5 of which are a technical descent and the rest is a flat run-in.

Upon crossing the finish line for the second time the punchy climb re-appears and the riders have to do it all over again.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
