The 2024 Tour of the Alps arrives as one of the most important preparation races on the calendar for riders targeting the Giro d'Italia, offering five demanding stages through the mountains of Austria and northern Italy that will provide a stern test of climbing legs and racing sharpness ahead of the season's first Grand Tour.
The race has built a strong reputation in recent years for attracting top general classification talent, and this edition looks set to continue that tradition. The route weaves through the Tyrol and Trentino regions, serving up relentless vertical gain and technical descents that demand complete riders rather than pure climbers. The short stage distances typical of this race mean that every moment of weakness is punished and there is little time to recover from mistakes.
Among the favourites, Primoz Roglic will be one of the most closely watched riders in the peloton. The Slovenian has used this race as part of his Giro preparation before and his ability to perform at altitude combined with his time trial strength makes him an obvious contender. His Bora Hansgrohe team will be keen to build momentum and cohesion ahead of what they hope will be a serious Grand Tour campaign.
Geraint Thomas and his Ineos Grenadiers squad represent another significant threat, with the team historically strong at this kind of race and capable of controlling proceedings with their depth of climbing support.
The Italian riders will carry the hopes of the home crowds, with the tifosi lining the mountain roads eager to see their favourites shine on familiar roads. The high altitude finishes will separate the true climbing specialists and could set the tone for the entire Giro season before a wheel has been turned in anger at that race.
