Stephen Williams wins Santos Tour Down Under
Stephen Williams won the final stage of the Tour Down Under today to seal the GC victory by nine seconds ahead of Jhonatan Narváez and Isaac Del Toro by 11 seconds. Naravaez and Del Toro finished in second and third on Mount Lofty to secure the same positions in the overall, after a frenetic and thrilling finale.
“I’m over the moon, really happy and really pleased to finish it off,” said the 27-year-old after the 126km stage. "I knew we’d give ourselves a good chance today on Lofty, it’s a perfect finish for me. To come in a small, select group like that, I’d always back myself going to the line in a sprint, so to do it in this jersey as well makes it even more special.”
After 45 minutes of frantic action, the breakaway pulled itself together, containing Stefan De Bod, Jacopo Mosca, Gil Gelders, Maurice Ballerstedt, Simon Geschke, António Morgado, and Franck Bonnamour. The seven put almost 4 minutes into the peloton.
The attackers were reeled in with 4 kilometres left to race. Isaac Del Toro shredded the peloton to pieces by setting a ferocious pace on Mount Lofty. Only leader Stephen Williams, Jhonatan Narváez, Isaac Del Toro, Bart Lemmen and Laurence Pithie could follow. It came down to a sprint, and the man in ochre takes the win, not only on the stage but also on GC.\n
