Stage 4 of the 2024 Tour Down Under is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.

Welsford dominates again on stage 4
Aussie Sam Welsford capitalized on a superior team lead out and in-form legs to catapult him onto the top step of the Santos Tour Down Under podium yet again at Port Elliot on Friday. The Bora-Hansgrohe rider finished ahead of Binian Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) and Lars Boven (Alpecin Deceuninck) to claim his third victory of the week.
Not long after the race started, Pieter Serry initiated a breakaway that saw Jackson Medway and Vinicius Rangel follow. However, the Belgian rider dropped back into the peloton a few kilometres later, leaving the other two to gain a maximum lead of over four minutes over most of the 136km route.
The race situation remained steady, with the peloton holding a gap of around 3 minutes until they decided to get serious about the sprint finish. The attackers were finally reeled in with 13 kilometres to go and then it’s up to the fast men. Sam Welsford powered to his third win in four days to celebrate his 28th birthday.
“It’s pretty special to get a win on my birthday,” Welsford said. “For a minute, I almost forgot it was my birthday because I was so into the race. The boys did an amazing job looking after me.”
Isaac del Toro carries a slender lead of 1 second into the decisive weekend.
“I feel good – a little bit nervous but good (in reference to the upcoming stages),’’ the 20-year-old UAE Emirates rider said.
