Race Recap
Welsford is 'well fast' in Campbellton
Sam Welsford sprinted to his second stage win in three days' time in Campbelltown ahead of Elias Viviani (Ineos) and Daniel McLay (Team Arkea B&B Hotels).
Isaac Del Toro finishes safely in the bunch to stay in the lead of the general classification.
“It’s a bit of a blur, it was superfast,” Welsford said. “We knew at the top of Gorge Road (in the Adelaide Hills) we had to be in a good position. It was a crazy downhill, it was quite technical with lots of corners, the boys did a good job of holding the ride making sure it wasn’t too early and making sure that we kept out of the wind. We knew if we went too early, we would go to the back and the boys at that speed were amazing and did a really good job of leading me out. It’s very special to come to the race with the team and the first one together and pick up two stages, it is a product of how committed we are and how motivated we are to make sure we win together in a big way.\n \n“We have our eyes set on some really big goals this year, and it is a good stepping stone to make sure when we come to the Grand Tours or one-day races, we have it dialed.”
Luke Burns initiated the breakaway. He was first joined by Tristan Saunders, and then Axel Mariault. The three opened a three minute lead before it came back together again in the last 31 kilometres. Saunders was the last attacker to be caught.
Sam Welsford powered to his second stage win in three days in the bunch sprint that ensued, while Isaac Del Toro retained the ochre jersey.
